Technically the pieces in this gallery are some recent work that were
inspired by the encaustic technique of painting with wax. I have used the
wax and pigmented wax to collage the images to the wooden surface. In
this way the layers accumulate on each piece as the wax, images, paper
are applied.
Visually the look of these pieces are hard to capture in 2-D. The surface
looks down through layers of transparent and semi-transparent
pigmented and natural beeswax. With the addition of drawings, prints and
other inserted objects, the image doesn't just work at the surface of the
piece.
On the non-technical side these pieces had their start in a personal
cathartic exercise. The wax and layered images reference experiences
and episodes in life. They become buried in the "wax" of time. Sometimes
they need to be revisited and the layers exposed for their redeeming
value. Sometimes they need to be acknowledged and then buried in order
to reduce their affect on today.
